10 Biggest TV Cliffhangers That Will Never Be Resolved

6. Why Did Sam Not Leap Home? - Quantum Leap

Lois And Clark Baby
NBC

A show about the body hopping adventures of a scientist named Sam and his hologram buddy Al, Quantum Leap was a nice mixture of comedy, drama and thoughtful science fiction.

The final episode has Sam leap to a bar on the day of his birth, but rather than leaping into the body of a stranger, he sees his own reflection in a mirror. He chats with a mysterious bartender who tells Sam he’s in control of his own leaps and that he can return home anytime. Instead he decides to visit Al’s first wife and tell her Al is alive (he was a prisoner of war at the time) and is coming home. Then some text informs the viewer Al and his wife went on to have four daughters, but that Sam never returned home.

The episode originally served as a cliffhanger but when the show was cancelled the creator tacked on the text to give viewers some closure. It’s a divisive ending, with some being angry with the idea Sam never went home and others feeling the bittersweet conclusion fit the show. Whatever the case, it's still induces some manly tears.
