10 Buffy The Vampire Slayer Episodes That Changed Everything

5. The Gift

Killing off characters, sure - but killing off a main character? Now that's breaking new ground. Buffy's eventual death was foretold as early as the show's third season (and that's discounting the fact that she technically drowned in the show's first season, though as she would later put it, only for a minute!). In that season's finale, Graduation Day Part 2, Faith would tell the Slayer (in a shared dream) "Miles to go, little Miss Muffet, counting down from 7-3-0" in response to Buffy saying there was something she had to be doing. What was it she had to be doing? Dying. "Miles to go" of course is from Frost's Stopping By The Woods On A Snowy Evening, and the full line (miles to go before I sleep - which had appeared in Buffy at least once before) is commonly thought to refer to death. Little Miss Muffet represents Buffy herself, of course, and 730? Well, that happens to be the number of days in two years - and it was 730 days later when Buffy actually did die on the show, in the fifth season finale The Gift. It was at that point that the show would switch networks, arguably at its peak (the fifth season is generally the show's most beloved).
