10 Characters From Famous TV Shows Who Were Swept Under The Carpet

7. Coco - The Golden Girls

The original premise of The Golden Girls was to feature three women, Dorothy, Rose, and Blanche, living with their flamboyant gay housekeeper, Coco, played by Charles Levin, a role that was pretty radical for a mainstream sitcom in the mid-eighties. Coco was intended to be a huge comedic part of the show and it was thought that Coco would work well in connection with his three co-stars. Coco appeared in the pilot episode of the show in a large role but was subsequently dropped without ever being mentioned again, which puzzled many die-hard fans of the show. After all, it was quite apparent that Coco was living with the girls in the pilot episode. What happened was Estelle Getty. Sophia, Dorothy's mother, was originally intended to be more of an occasional, recurring character, But, after the pilot, it was felt that Getty had stolen the show with her very matter-of-fact delivery. Sophia was quickly written into the series as a full cast member living with her daughter. But, with the promotion of Sophia to regular character, Coco's role on the show became redundant. The decision was made to cut Coco out of the series, and he was never heard from again beyond his initial pilot appearance.
