10 Darkest Endings In Doctor Who
3. The Girl Who Waited (2011)
The Eleventh Doctor and Rory are separated from Amy in a hospital on the planet Apalapucia, where a plague deadly to species with two hearts is running rampant. This means that the Doctor is confined to the TARDIS, while Rory dodges deadly androids on his hunt through the facility for his wife. But, due to some timey-wimey shenanigans, the Amy that Rory finds has been waiting for them for thirty-six years, and is now a bitter shadow of her former self.
Eventually, the Doctor is able to bring the younger Amy into the same timestream as the older Amy, and promises to let them both onboard the TARDIS. But rule number one, as we all know, is the Doctor lies.
Once the younger Amy and Rory are inside, the Doctor locks the door and traps the older Mrs Pond outside. He then leaves the decision up to Rory. Leave now with only the younger Amy and guaranteed safety? Or let the older Amy inside and risk all of time collapsing in on itself? Rory, with the older Amy’s blessing, makes the heart-breaking decision to leave the older version of his wife behind to die. As Rory tells the Doctor, it’s just not fair.
