The Time War has been depicted at Big Finish since 2015, but the first Gallifrey: Time War release in 2018 takes place whilst the conflict was in its infancy. The universe is gearing up for war, and on Gallifrey, the Time Lords need a new president to fight it. The series had already seen Narvin and Romana dealing with the temporal powers, Ace and Brax combatting Daleks on an ancient research station and Leela on an assignment with the War Master. But all built to the finale...

The finale, Desperate Measures, saw Romana attempting peace talks with the Dalek Emperor, whilst also running to once again become Gallifrey's president. To fight this Time War, some on Gallifrey were also plotting Project Revenant which would see the mass resurrection of Time Lords. This would also see the resurrection of Gallifrey's founding father: Rassilon.

To do so, the High Council used the body of Romana's presidential candidate opponent, Valerian, who's family history traced back to the great Time Lord. Upon Valerian being declared the president, and following the presidential ceremony, as seen in the Invasion of Time, Rassilon's Matrix imprint was projected onto him, killing Valerian in the process, but resurrecting Rassilon, something listeners did not expect.

This gave Gallifrey the ruler it needed to fight the Time War, but is Rassilon really the best man for this job, or will this only make the conflict worse?
