10 Doctor Who Characters Who Almost Had Different Endings

7. Shona Was Supposed To Join The TARDIS

Nick Frost's glorious take on Santa Claus aside, Faye Marsay's feisty shop worker, Shona, is the standout character in Last Christmas.

She's funny, outspoken, and curious - basically, the ideal recipe for a Doctor Who companion, particularly opposite the brash Twelfth Doctor. So is it any surprise that, at one point, Moffat intended to give her that exact role?

Had Coleman stuck to the initial plan (well, the second initial plan) and left at the end of Last Christmas, Moffat was "eyeing up" Marsay as the next companion, which would've presumably led to her travelling with the Doctor in Series 9 and Series 10, right up to Capaldi's regeneration.

But again, when Coleman decided to stay, the idea of Shona becoming a member of team TARDIS was killed in its tracks.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
