10 Doctor Who Characters Who Came Back From The Dead

4. Davros (Destiny Of The Daleks)

Osgood
BBC

The twisted creator of the Daleks has made a habit of cheating death many times over, but often through a kind of retconning on the part of the scriptwriters or simply through people failing to ask how he could possibly still be alive.

At the end of Genesis of the Daleks, Davros is killed by his own creations when he is quite clearly shot on screen. But the villain had proved to be massively popular, so by the time Destiny of the Daleks rolled around, it is revealed that rather than killing him outright, the tyrannical tinpots had merely damaged his life support system instead. Conveniently enough, since they required his assistance to end their stalemate with the Movellans.

Davros would continue to cheat death, but at least there was frequently a plausible explanation built into each “death” on how he could possibly escape (such as the tiny life support vessel that appears in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment at the end of Remembrance of the Daleks). His return in the new series was explained, as so many of these returns were during Russell T Davies' tenure, as being due to his having escaped the Time War (with a little help from Dalek Caan).
