10 Doctor Who Characters Who Nearly Got Their Own Spin Off

10. The War Doctor

Just when you think you're finally get your head around Doctor Who's ever changing mythology, Steven Moffat decides to throw an almighty spanner in the works. Such was the case at the end of Series 7 when it was revealed that there's actually been a secret incarnation of TV's favourite Time Lord that nobody has ever known about. And thus the War Doctor was born. And oh, what a Doctor he was! He went on to play a fundamental role in the 50th anniversary spectacular, The Day of the Doctor, and, as it turns out, that just wasn't enough. As the incarnation who fought in the Time War, it was to expected that fans would want as much from him as they could get and it's no exaggeration to say that the landmark special, as epic as it was, only just touched the service of what this guilt ridden warrior had to offer. John Hurt's a busy man, of course, so it's unlikely that'll ever have the time to commit to that full blown War Doctor spin off that everybody keeps talking about, but there is a tie-in novel, Engines of War, which documents the chain of events that led to the fateful Moment that changed everything. It's not a TV show, but it's certainly the next best thing.
