10 Doctor Who Characters Who Nearly Got Their Own Spin Off

6. Jo Grant

It didn't work out for Ace but at least there was another Classic Series companion who got to experience the wonders that The Sarah Jane Adventures had to offer. Katy Manning, who journeyed with the Third Doctor as Jo Grant back in the early 70s, reprised her beloved role in the 2010 adventure Death of the Doctor which also featured a guest appearance from Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith. Katy well and truly managed to hold her own, though, as it was revealed that her character (alongside her husband, Clifford Jones, with whom she originally departed with in The Green Death) had spent the intervening years travelling the world, partaking in various acts of environmental progressivism and protests and somehow finding the time to raise seven children along the way. Whatever floats your boat, guys. It's a shame that Jo's comeback was over so quickly, really, since it was all she needed to affirm that she could more than handle a spin off series of her own. If behind the scenes rumblings are to be believed, she was almost enlisted as Sarah Jane's replacement when Elisabeth Sladen passed away in 2011 but the show was eventually taken off air altogether in Lis' memory (and rightly so, too). You never know, though. The Jo Grant Chronicles might be just around the corner. There's certainly a gap in the market for it.
