10 Doctor Who Companions Who Deserved Better

9. Martha Jones

Across her run with the Doctor, it's fair to say that Martha Jones was something of a rebound for the Time Lord, who was still mourning the loss of Rose Tyler.

Martha joins the TARDIS at the start of Series 3 after saving the Doctor's life in the first episode, and quickly falls for her dashing new friend only to be repeatedly rejected by him throughout the series.

Things come to a head in the three-part finale involving the return of the Master, where Martha's entire family is tortured by him. During this time, Martha spends an entire year travelling the world and telling everyone about the Doctor, only for time to be reversed, and that entire year erased from history.

Martha then realises that the Doctor will never reciprocate the feelings she has for him, and decides to leave the TARDIS to be with her family. Upon her departure, she gives the Doctor her mobile number, and receives a hilariously awkward friend-zone hug from him. Poor Martha.

And, in true Doctor and Martha fashion, he never once calls her again.
