3. The Waters Of Mars
This profoundly unsettling episode focuses heavily on the Doctor’s hero complex, and gave fans an unnatural fear of water.
After landing on Mars in 2059, the Doctor encounters the first human colony on the planet just before a fixed point in time. He soon discovers why this colony never made it back to Earth after discovering a water-based virus that can turn anyone into a monster with just one drop (think H2O, but with zombies instead of mermaids).
However, as the Doctor is also nearing his impending doom, he believes in being above the laws of time, and decides to save everyone, changing the timeline. The Doctor turns into an egotistical jerk throughout the episode, as he believes that saving everyone is the best way to go instead of caring about the follow-on effects of the tragedy that unfolds.
Although the Doctor is able to save some of the crew, the episode has a bleak and depressing ending as Captain Adelaide Brooke condemns the Doctor for abusing his power, and decides to kill herself anyway so that her granddaughter will still be motivated by her death.
