10 Doctor Who Episodes You Completely Forgot Existed

8. 42 - Chris Chibnall

42 isn't that bad. It also isn't that good. Chris Chibnall's very first Doctor Who episode feels like the result of a machine learning experiment that has been fed the entire back catalogue of the series.

It sticks most of the base under siege clichés in the opening minutes: the Doctor is questioned by the crew, there's a lot of running through hallways whilst sparks fly, and the crew begin to be picked off one at a time, except this time, these characters are barely established at all and their demises don't seem like a huge loss - and if you're not convinced here, try to remember their names...

Whilst the bulk of this episode is fairly bland, the scene in which Martha is jettisoned in an escape pod is the reason this episode isn't higher up the list, as this scene is actually very well written. Unfortunately, Martha's doom is averted here rather too easily, which undercuts the moment.

There is also a less than subtle amount of recycled ideas from Series 2's The Impossible Planet / The Satan Pit , both conceptually with crew becoming possessed by an ancient evil, and visually with the aesthetic of the episode borrowing heavily from its predecessor.

In short, 42 is far from the most original episode of the show.
