10 Doctor Who Episodes You Completely Forgot Existed

7. The Crimson Horror - Mark Gatiss

Doctor Who The Idiot's Lantern
BBC

Series 7B is another series that many would consider to be a low point of NuWho, with lots of behind the scenes issues and rushed scripts as Moffat attempted to balance his time between the show and his other baby, Sherlock, all whilst trying to cobble together something for the 50th Anniversary.

Perhaps it is not surprising that, given Sherlock was in production, Gatiss didn't turn around one of his better scripts this time around, penning an episode that really had no idea what it wanted to be.

For the entire first act, it seems like we might be getting a Doctor-lite story (something not done nearly enough during the Moffat years) following Vastra, Jenny and Strax as they infiltrate Sweetville, but this is sadly tossed aside.

The Paternoster Gang deserved better than they received on screen!

Once the Doctor is rescued, the focus shifts to him, and it has to be said, he's written and acted strangely here, skidding around corners and acting like a horny and slightly creepy schoolboy around Jenny and Clara. The episode stops in its tracks, and not even a giant leech attaching itself to the late Diana Rigg can save it.
