10 Doctor Who Love Stories That Will Warm Your Heart(s)
6. Ian Chesterton And Barbara Wright
Doctor Who's first romance is a classic of slow building love. It's obvious from the start that Ian is rather taken with Barbara. Fans all know that when he agrees to accompany Barbara to spy on Susan, it's less the mystery but Barbara he's interested in investigating. His chat up line of "I take things as they come" is a classic, too.
Once travelling on the TARDIS, it is Barbara who has Ian's ear above the others and his advice that she seeks out. The two make a great team, complimenting each other not just in their interests - his the scientific, hers the historical - but in their approaches to problems, Ian the problem solver and Barbara the empathiser. Over the course of diverse adventures, you can see the easy friendship between then develop into more but, like the best romances, it remains unspoken and simmers blow the surface (fans hope anyway - unless the TARDIS has a Christian Grey style dungeon they snuck off to between adventures...).
When the pair get the chance to return home to the 1960s, the charming montage of them back in London, jumping onto buses and skipping hand in hand tells you that, whatever the day is, Coal Hill School won't be getting its two teachers back for at least the next week as the pair have planning - *ahem* - to do. Something tells us Ian will be reusing an earlier line: "Do you feel it? It's alive!"
