5. The Eighth Doctor And Charley Pollard

Regulars of Big Finish, the company that has produced original audio dramas since 1999, will know that before the Tenth Doctor's dalliances, the Doctor in his Eighth incarnation experienced one of his strongest romances. The Doctor saved Charley from the doomed 101 airship in the 1930s. However, Charley, or more formally Charlotte Pollard, was meant to have died there, causing some serious implications for the web of time.

By the time the Doctor realised this, he was already in love with her and in the adventure Nevermore, Charley offers to kill herself to make things right and our hero declares his love for her. This leads to him being infected by entity Zagreus and being exiled to a universe without the concept of time. It's basically the equivalent of hell for a Time Lord.

It's only when Charley believes she has seen the Doctor killed that she leaves him, however the Doctor believes she has simply left. This wasn't the end, however, because Charley found herself rescued by the Sixth Doctor and was forced to keep her prior knowledge of him a secret.
