The Harry Kim of Enterprise, Anthony Montgomery's NX-01 navigator quickly falls into the hole only recently vacated by the Forever Ensign. Travis Mayweather is lauded as the ultimate space kid. He is a seasoned "boomer" from the interstellar cargo runs and likely the most experienced space legs on the ship.

But he is often left to do absolutely nothing. Relegated to the level of "course set, Captain" for four years, Mayweather's backstory and character receive only fleeting advancements in Fortunate Son and Horizon, both of which focused more on the stories of long-haul freighters. It would take until Demons and Terra Prime for the writers to figure out what to do with him, Gannet providing a link to his past.

Given his more rough and ready upbringing and experience at the edges of known space, there was so much more potential for the character, yet he remains underutilised for the majority of the show.

He had less to do than Uhura in The Original Series and was "almost invisible" during the second season. Is there a redeeming moment for him? Yes, but that would have to wait for the Mirror Universe.

A Star Trek fan from birth, I love to dive into every aspect of the franchise in front and behind the screen. There's something here that's kept me interested for the best part of four decades! Now I'm getting back into writing and using Star Trek as my first line of literary attack. If I'm not here on WhatCulture then you're more than welcome to come and take a look at my blog, Some Kind of Star Trek at http://SKoST.co.uk or maybe follow me on Twitter as @TheWarpCore. Sometimes I force myself not to talk about Star Trek.
