10 Embarrassingly Shoddy Doctor Who Monsters

6. The Mara in 'Kinda'

One of the most famous lackluster effects or as I like to call them €˜effects they felt they had to hide for the DVD release€™ is the Mara snake from Kinda. There are 3 stages in its manifestation and it gets progressively worse as it grows. At first we see a poor Kinda native wrestling with a normal size toy rubber snake, then a larger specially made snake which of course doesn't move at all. Same snake is then shot against green screen and zoomed in on in close up which looks shockingly bad, then finally, a giant piece of ducting painted pink, with a snake head at the end of it sways about as it hangs from the studio ceiling. In fairness, the head is pretty well made but everything else about it is utterly unconvincing. Aside from just looking like a snake, there is nothing snake like about it at all, it is about as animated as if it had hung itself in shame. The lower half of its body just lies in a vaguely coiled heap on the ground. Trying to realize a giant snake on an 80€™s budget was never going to go well though was it? Though they did a lot better the following year with 'Snakedance'.
