As soon as the news dropped that RTD would be returning to Doctor Who, the rumours began flying that David Tennant would be back to play a completely different Doctor and fill 14's shoes. While it's not entirely impossible, it's highly unlikely.

The thing is, some fans are very nostalgic. It's understandable. It's their childhood. Having grown up witnessing RTD and Tennant being the dream team that catapulted Doctor Who to the height of its popularity, it would seem obvious to pair them up again. While it would be great to see Tennant return, he would be much better suited to a role in the 60th anniversary instead of a full run, which might not live up to the popularity of his previous time in the role. We also need to remember that his 10th Doctor already regenerated right back into the same person at the end of season 4.

If Tennant is back, it's likely that it'll be as the 10 we know and love, or maybe even an alternate universe version of his Doctor. Whatever role he may or not have, it definitely won't be the 14th Doctor. Russell knows he needs to be bigger and better than to rely on a gimmick for success, especially when his big return has so much expectation attached to it.

Simon is a writer, cat dad and presenter of a geeky radio show with his husband. He loves Doctor Who (except 10 who can get in the bin…only joking.) He idolises Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Lara Croft and would 100% be a Sith Lord in a galaxy far, far away. He wishes life was like a musical so he’d actually be a good singer.
