10 False Doctor Who Facts You Probably Believe
6. Doctor's Stay For Three Series
Over the years, Doctor's have varied in their duration in the TARDIS, but the average is three series. Troughton, Davison, McCoy, Tennant, Smith and Capaldi all stayed for three series of the show. But not every incarnation does.
Pertwee set the record for the longest stint, staying for five years, but Tom Baker came in and smashed that by doing seven. However, when Peter Davison came along, he claims he was told by Patrick Troughton to only stay in the role for three years (three series). And besides Christopher Eccleston one series, all modern Doctor's have done the same.
Whilst we currently don't know how long Jodie will stay, even if tabloids say Troughton gave her the same advise (yes, not possible), there is currently nothing showing that Jodie will be stopping with series 13.
William Hartnell was sadly asked to leave the role after three years (two serials into his fourth season) as was Colin Baker after two years, and if they'd had their way who knows how many seasons they'd have done.
But, no matter the pattern of other Doctors, there is no definitive tenure, and it is all down to the BBC and actor themselves.
