Seinfeld Appearance: "The Lip-Reader" Deaf actress Marlee Matlin made a big splash right away in her career, winning a Best Actress Oscar for "Children of a Lesser God". But, as you can guess, roles for deaf actors are scarce, so her Oscar win didn't exactly lift her into leading lady status. Matlin has basically been a specialty actress her whole career. Whenever a show had an episode with a deaf character, Matlin was there to fill the role. In a 1993 episode of "Seinfeld", Jerry starts dating a deaf woman named Laura. Obviously, it was Matlin. Upon finding out that Laura can read lips, George exploits her to find out what an ex-girlfriend is saying at a party. But Laura's lip-reading isn't perfect, which leads to some funny moments of miscommunication.
