10 Female Actors Who Would Have Been A Better Doctor Who

9. Katie Brayben

Doctor Who
BBC

A bit of a dark horse selection here, the 2015 Olivier Award winner will be best known to Who fans for her pre title death as Ellie in the Season 10 episode Oxygen. While having minimal airtime, her appearance was very strong, so much so that her scene appeared in the trailer for that series.

Having a relatively unknown as the new Doctor would have been a bold choice, but having an actress who would be known exclusively as the titular time lord would have made it easier to embrace her in the iconic role. Brayben's strong stage background is also suited for the Doctor, with the ability to bring the character to life with a sense of gravitas essential.

Brayben was not the only relatively unknown who would be worth considering, with the likes of Samantha Barks, who portrayed Eponine in Les Miserables, another strong option. She was a hit in her screen debut, with her depth of emotion something that could have really worked for the Doctor.
