10 Foreign-Language Netflix Series You Need To Watch
4. Terrace House
Imagine a reality TV show without any arguments, scandals, or controversy. You’ve pretty much just imagined Terrace House. Following the format of classic reality shows like Big Brother, Terrace House takes three men and three women and puts them together in a house filled with cameras. We, along with a few commentators, then watch as the strangers interact and attempt to form romantic relationships.
Unlike Anglophone equivalents in which housemates tend to start getting it on within the first 24 hours, Terrace House shows that the Japanese attitude towards love and relationships is much more refined, with contestants really taking their time to get to know each other. The slow pace helps to make these relationships feel so much more genuine and endearing.
The show is slow-moving but never feels dull. There's so much charm packed into every episode as we watch these soft-spoken, respectful people trying to establish new relationships while adhering to cultural etiquette. On the outside, it's a formula that doesn't sound like it would work, but in action, Terrace House makes for remarkably compelling TV.
