3% is a highly-rated Brazilian show about a dystopian future in which the world has essentially been divided into two zones: Inland and Offshore. The vast majority of people live in poverty in the Inland, while the wealthy live lives of opulence and luxury on the Offshore. Young people from the Inland get a chance to enter the Offshore each year, but they have to pass a series of increasingly difficult tests known as the Process in order to be accepted, and only 3% of them make the grade.
The series follows a young woman named Michele as she tackles the Process and attempts to make her way into the Offshore with a group of other candidates. With thrilling scenarios and an increasingly twisted web of stories all coming together, 3% is remarkably well-made and a perfect example of how good dystopian fiction can be.
Dystopian views of the future often prove to be paper thin, but this one has a really interesting foundation and the writers keep on surprising us by taking the plot in unexpected directions as the show progresses. If you loved Hunger Games and similar Young Adult stories, 3% needs to be on your Netflix queue.
