10 Gore Anime That Will Give You Nightmares

This is a series that proves you don't need a fantastical set-up to show some downright horror gore. Instead, you can look back to a bloody period of the past and display it in all its glory.

History has created many mighty warriors, such as Spartans, Maori, Celts and more. Still, one of the most popular and deadly was the samurai, and this show gives you a great eye into how these legendary swordsmen earned their reputation.

Shigurui begins with a showdown in a tournament to crown the successor to Kogan Iwamoto's Dojo. The pair facing off are the one-armed Fujiki and his blind rival Irako. As the two lock eyes, the series flashes backward to reveal the history between the duo and explore what led them here.

The series totally overdoes its violence, as you feel every slice and cut from the samurai's blades. There is a distinct feeling of strength and sharpness to their weapons, causing all of the deaths to splatter a sea of blood. This is only made worse in the Seppuku scenes, which take an already horrible suicide method, and animates it viscerally and painfully.

It's a dark and depressing show that will give you blood spurts, spilt entrails and epic sword battles galore.
