Dabo girl and then wife of the Grand Nagus aboard DS9, Chase Masterson became an intrinsic part of the show's recurring cast from late in its third season as Leeta.

Yet what many may not know is of her work against bullying. After five years of working as a mentor on Homeboy Industries (the largest worldwide gang intervention programme), Masterson cofounded the PopCultureHero coalition in 2013.

Using "evidence-based psychology in combination with heroic characters and stories", it helps to teach social emotional learning and bullying prevention to children and teens. By introducing these principles early, PopCulture Hero hopes to help reduce troubles and anxieties that could resurface in later life due to what can be devastating early experiences.

Masterson herself serves on the Advisory Board of the United Nations Association and has spoken at numerous influential forums including the UN itself, UNESCO, Google, the YMCA of the US and CBS News.

A Star Trek fan from birth, I love to dive into every aspect of the franchise in front and behind the screen. There's something here that's kept me interested for the best part of four decades! Now I'm getting back into writing and using Star Trek as my first line of literary attack. If I'm not here on WhatCulture then you're more than welcome to come and take a look at my blog, Some Kind of Star Trek at http://SKoST.co.uk or maybe follow me on Twitter as @TheWarpCore. Sometimes I force myself not to talk about Star Trek.
