10 Great TV Shows Made From STUPID Ideas

1. HBO's Watchmen

Watchmen 2019
HBO

You could practically FEEL the collective cringe of comic book fans everywhere when this show was originally announced. DC is notorious for symbolically mocking Alan Moore by constantly making meaningless, idiotic additions to his magnum opus to remind him that it will never be truly his. And the early trailers didn't help at all, seemingly determined to make people think that this was going to be another one of those idiotic additions.

And then that first episode dropped and everyone collectively choked on their damn feet.

This isn't just a more than worthy addition to the lore of Watchmen, it's one of the best comic book adaptations ever made by the hands of humans. A politically charged, dark as the bowels of hell, progressively minded commentary not only on comic books and comic book movies, but on the original Watchmen and the fandom that has grown out of it.

It only being a year old, I don't want to give away too much that happens here, but rest assured, if you have problems with certain characters (you know the ones) from the original comics, this show shares them and makes those problems a driving plot point.

Everyone with half a brain was calling this show dead on arrival from minute one of it being announced. But HBO's Watchmen proved them all wrong in just one season of excellent television.

John Tibbetts is a novelist in theory, a Whatculture contributor in practice, and a nerd all around who loves talking about movies, TV, anime, and video games more than he loves breathing. Which might be a problem in the long term, but eh, who can think that far ahead?
