10 Great TV Shows Starring The Doctor Who Cast
5. Jenna Coleman - The Serpent
While fans were undoubtedly used to seeing Clara Oswald in mortal peril over and over again on Doctor Who, the adventure and fun of the show - tied with Jenna Coleman's loveable enthusiasm - kept it from feeling too severe. Well, don't expect that same level of comfort in this one.
The Serpent is a thrilling and uncomfortable cocktail of murder and seduction, which tells the true story of Charles Sobhraj, a serial killer also known as The Serpent. This devilish figure frequented the hippie trail in Asia, killing, avoiding detection and charming those around him, including his companion Marie Andree Leclerc, played here by Coleman.
This is an unflinching and uncompromising show that paints a terrifying picture of a man who became a monster. It's got a stylish '70s period aesthetic and does a solid job of being respectful to the killer's victims whilst still indulging in the horror of the actual figure.
Coleman does a wonderful job of playing a character who is believably sucked into this world. She brings confliction, fear, seduction and all the necessary tools to play this real-life figure.
