10 Greatest Anime Openings Of All Time
7. Ergo Proxy
Ergo Proxy provided a great deal of serious psychological scares during its highly acclaimed, mind-bending, 23 episode run. A bleak and harsh, cyberpunk-infused look at a dystopian future where humans and androids coexist in a domed city, the series provides a great deal of dark social commentary. At this point, it almost goes without saying that Ergo Proxy’s opening is chock full of harsh, blackhearted imagery infused with grungy overtones.
The dreary doom and gloom of the opening’s visual is mixed with the melancholy yet slightly buoyant Kiri by MONORAL. At a glance, one might expect the opening to be accompanied by a gritty industrial track artists like Nine Inch Nail and Marilyn Manson. MONORAL’s English language track is instead more reminiscent of slightly more pop-oriented rock groups like Lifehouse and The Goo Goo Dolls.
The fearsome, often grim graphics of Ergo Proxy’s spooky intro are a perfect fit for its polluted future world full of skies ruined by global, ecological disasters thousands of years prior. An ominous scene setter, the opening helps prepare the viewer for the shocking storylines to come.
