10 Greatest Minor Scrubs Characters
2. Dr. Paul Zeltzer
Played By – Bob Clendenin, Appearances – 7 (My Hero, My New Old Friend, His Story, My Office, My Chopped Liver, My Nah Nah Nah, My Finale)
Sex is always a great source of comedy, hence the sheer number of successful films that have been solely orientated it, crude and crass as many of them may be. Scrubs never shied away from the subject, frequently pushing the boundaries of what is considered acceptable by the standards of American network television with its often-humorous explorations of the characters sex lives.
Any quirk within these was made instantly normal whenever the debauched Dr. Zeltzer made an appearance. Initially depicted as a man uncertain about being described as the hospital’s finest oncologist, Zeltzer evolved into a character that could deliver ludicrous lines about visiting prostitutes, swinging and more hardcore subjects such as BDSM and rape fantasy in a deadpan manner.
Much of the humour from this came from how other characters viewed the normalcy of such activities, not even batting an eyelid when they were candidly brought up in otherwise normal conversation.
Bob Clendenin’s work in the role impressed Lawrence sufficiently to give him a major role on his next series, Cougar Town, though his work as Zeltzer will instantly make any Scrubs fan expect explicit sleaziness whenever he crops up elsewhere.
