2. Nothing Suits Me Like A Suit How I Met Your Mother (S5E12)
"Girls vs. Suits" is How I Met Your Mother's 100th episode and what better reason for a big-budget musical number? It's always handy having a performer like Neil Patrick Harris on call to fill the demands of the song and he does a damn good job too. The episode itself has a lot of important plot points to the overall story arc of the series and so this song almost serves, not only as a celebration of the show's centennial episode, but also to make it even more memorable and mark the episode with the importance it deserves. With a company of 75 dancers, all choreographed by Glee's Zach Woodlee, and a 50 piece orchestra, the producers really went all out and it pays off. This musical moment epitomises why we love How I Met Your Mother. As a dream sequence that takes place in Barney's head, it's one of those surreal comedic moments that HIMYM has come to be known for and the way the execution is not cheap or lazy makes it even funnier. Again, none of the cast takes themselves too seriously and they all wholeheartedly join in. The effort even earned the song's writers (and show creators) Carter Bays and Craig Thomas an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics. The lyrics are cleverly put together, with only a few feeling a little squashed in while the song itself is skilfully structured with three well-joined sections before finishing with a half-time syncopated finale that stirs feelings of cheer and leaves us restraining ourselves from spontaneous applause. Funny, creative and exceptionally musical, this song is one of the highlights of the entire series. Oh and fun fact the song reached #50 on the UK singles chart.
