10 Horror TV Shows That Broke All The Rules

2. Midnight Mass - Reinventing A Classic Baddie

Before Squid Game came along and knocked it off its perch, Midnight Mass was the latest of Netflix’s offerings to go viral. Set on a small, isolated fishing island, the limited series offered up a twisted story of religious fanaticism intertwined with supernatural horror.

All too often mainstream series rely on what audiences already know, it’s sort of a rule that to get your show commissioned you have to guarantee as much as you can that it’ll make money. Because of this showrunners can be too scared to try something new and innovative, so resort back to the tried and tested tropes.

Midnight Mass looked at the largely homogenous vampire subgenre (sexy vampire man meets beautiful non-vampire woman and chaos ensues), and decided to do better: serving us a truly gripping plot with a range of interesting characters.

For the most part the show delivered on every little thing we could’ve wanted from it: there was romance, tension, fear, and a horrifying monster lurking in the shadows - and lurking in the humans too. Oh and if you weren’t sold yet, there’s also Rahul Kohli, the official horror TV man-of-your-dreams.
