Knowing what we know now  that Doctor Who's future beyond Chris Chibnall and Jodie Whittaker was in doubt  it's easy to see The Power of the Doctor as a de-facto 60th anniversary special.

It's got Daleks, Cybermen, the Master, returning companions, the Fugitive Doctor, UNIT, David Tennant, and all the surviving classic series Doctors, barring Tom Baker.

The involvement of the classic Doctors in The Power of the Doctor was heavily rumoured, due to the fateful decision by several of the actors to have dinner together and pose for a photo during filming.

With this knowledge in the back of their heads, Doctor Who fans were hoping that Paul McGann would get more time in the spotlight, and that Tom Baker would be joining the others. Well... one out of two Liverpudlian Doctors isn't bad. Chris Chibnall did reach out to Tom Baker, but he sadly wasn't available.

Disappointing it may have been, but it's not as if The Power of the Doctor was starved of classic connections. The incredible surprise of William Russell's return did somewhat make up for the lack of Fourth Doctor.
