It's a constant complaint of the Moffat era: the sonic screwdriver is becoming a tool of incredible power that the Doctor wields in nearly every circumstance imaginable. Which may be true, but does it ever resolve a plot, or is it just used to move stories onwards? The only plot it's ever resolved was 'The Power of Three'. Disappointing, in the end, but it was an episode that was more about Amy and Rory than it was the Shakri. It's mainly used for open doors and medical scans though; occasionally as a flashy way to fight the Silence, the Vigil or a Dalek, but we can excuse three combat uses in as many years can't we? Many have claimed that the Doctor should go hands-free again, even that writers should rest it for a couple of episodes. Which would be great, providing the Doctor doesn't get locked somewhere, leaving Moffat with a ten minute scene of him picking a lock, and no Hurt or Tennant to liven it up.
