9. Zero Kills Emperor Lelouch - Code Geass

An all-time classic, Code Geass gave us one of the best bittersweet endings of all time. At the heart of it, were the story’s two leading figures and their ultimate sacrifice.

After a long saga of going from best friends to bitter enemies to allies once again, Lelouch and Suzaku come up with one final plan to free the world from this cycle of violence and oppression. The Zero Requiem, as they decided to call it, saw Emperor Lelouch, having vanquished all his enemies and established absolute supremacy over the world, parade his defeated foes.

He puts his former allies and friends, and even his precious baby sister, on public display before taking them to their execution grounds. With the whole world looking on in disgust, the Emperor’s march gets interrupted by a lone shadowy figure. It was none other than a resurrected Zero. Zero, who of course was now played by Suzaku, intercepted Lelouch, evaded his security, before stabbing his best friend through the heart.

And thus, Lelouch was free of his burden, while Suzaku, as penance for his own crimes, would now bear the mantle of Zero until the end of his days.
