10 Incredible Stephen Colbert Moments That Prove He’s Perfect For The Late Show
7. Naming A Hungarian Bridge
Colbert always loved getting his audience, referred to as the Colbert Nation, involved in the show. In this particular example, there was an online poll about what to name a new bridge in Hungary, and so naturally, Stephen figured it should be named after himself. The three names who got the most votes would be reviewed by a committee, and then the bridge name would be chosen among those.
It went on for weeks, but by the end, Colbert easily won with 93,163 votes. In this segment at the conclusion of the bridge "storyline," actual Hungarian ambassador Andras Simonyi came on the show, and Colbert just couldn't hold back a smile as he, in character, pretends this whole thing is a massive deal and a huge victory.
The ambassador then explains two criteria that must have been met before the bridge is named after the person: they have to be fluent in Hungarian, and they have to be dead. It turns out they can only name the bridge after a dead person, so it didn't quite work out for the Colbert Nation. Still, it was all a fun way to get thousands of viewers involved in the show, and even if the bridge wasn't ultimately named after him, getting the real Hungarian ambassador to come on and explain why was a suitable conclusion.
