The story goes that Daft Punk was set to appear on The Colbert Report as part of the weeklong event "StePhest Colbchella 2013." One day before their segment was supposed to air, though, Daft Punk unexpectedly cancelled, apparently because they were already going to appear on MTV's Video Music Awards, and the appearance was an exclusive to that network.
"See, this network is owned by Viacom, which is also the owner of MTV," Colbert explained. "Well apparently, and this is a deeply guarded secret, so shhh...Daft Punk are going to make a surprise appearance on the MTV Video Music Awards -- spoiler alert. Don't tell anybody, cause fun fact: no one told me until 2:00 yesterday."
Colbert had already hyped up Daft Punk appearing on the show, and now he had a huge chunk of time to fill, so what happened? Viewers were treated to this amazing bit of television where Colbert just said screw it and danced along to Daft Punk's hit song without them, soon to be joined by celebrity guests including Hugh Laurie, Jeff Bridges, the Rockettes, Jimmy Fallon, and Matt Damon. Once again, Colbert turned a crappy situation into television gold.
