10 Incredible Stephen Colbert Moments That Prove He’s Perfect For The Late Show
5. Better Know A District: Yvette Clarke
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIcHWlU4wHoColbert's most glorious interviews were with people who didn't know what the hell they were talking about, and the childlike joy that fills his face when he realizes he got a major screw-up on camera is priceless. Usually, he'll either jokingly agree with the interview subject and they don't realize they're being mocked, or he'll keep poking and prodding at their answer to see if they can make themselves look any more stupid.
That was the case with this incredible Better Know a District moment with Yvette Clarke. During the interview, Colbert asks if she could go back in time to 1898, what would she say to the people of Brooklyn. First she goes on a weird tangent asking if she would be going back knowing what she knows now, not seeming to understand what people mean when they talk about time travel. Then she decides what she'd say is "set me free." Huh? Colbert asks her to clarify, and she really was implying that slavery was legal then. "Slavery. Really? I didn’t realize there was slavery in Brooklyn in 1898," he says.
He doesn't let her off the hook, asking, "Who would be enslaving you in 1898 in New York?" Her response? "The Dutch." It's not like he set her up for a dumb comment, but as soon as she said it, Colbert couldn't let it go.
