10 Insane Doctor Who Episodes That Almost Happened

1. Rose Was Created By The Doctor In An Experiment

Doctor Who Rose Tyler Quote
BBC

The eleventh episode of the 2005 series, Boom Town, was written by Russell T Davies. However, this wasn't always the plan. Davies only filled this slot himself because the episode that was meant to go here never came to fruition.

And in many ways, that's a good thing, because the story that we almost got is incredibly, almost unbelievably bizarre.

Originally, the eleventh episode was due to be scripted by Paul Abbott, who is most famous for creating British comedy series Shameless. He intended to reveal that Rose - stay with us here - had been created by the Doctor in an experiment to find the perfect companion. Okay then. Upon discovering this truth, Captain Jack would've faced a tricky moral dilemma: tell her what's going on, or stay quiet?

While the Ninth Doctor wasn't exactly in a stable place emotionally (thanks, Time War), quite how Abbott was planning to justify him lying to and manipulating Rose is anyone's guess. Furthermore, revealing that she was nothing more than the Doctor's plaything wouldn't have just flipped Series 1 on its head - it would've changed the course of modern Who as we know it.

This whole idea sounds bloody insane - and a little bit creepy - but who knows, maybe it would've provided a refreshing perspective on the Doctor/companion dynamic.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
