1. Fresh Prince Of Bel Air - Do We Really Need To Say More?
An American show theme that is known word for word by the majority of British people, many of whom have never seen it, as it is a common song to play in bars and clubs. Hell even people born years after the series ended can sing you the rap, and if that doesn't tell you how good the music for this intro is I don't know what does.
The brilliance of this theme is actually understated as it also serves as an excellent narrative tool. This show was a comedy but had plenty of serious tear jerkers and devastating moments. Will being sent from his home to avoid violent gangs in West Philadelphia is a tough way to start a comedy. To begin this way makes it hard to be taken as a light hearted comedy, to not begin and show it in a backstory is confusing.
By skipping over this in a catchy rap, the audience knows exactly why Will is in Bel Air, and the creators can begin the first episode in a place of comedy and happiness, saving the more serious themes for later episodes. Years or even decades can go by between you watching an episode, and yet you know right away both the why and the how of the series. That is not easy to do and this theme achieves it brilliantly while also being legimitately good music in it's own right.
