10 Lies About Doctor Who You Probably Believe
5. Series 5 Had An Intentional Fairytale Vibe
If you ask a Doctor Who fan to summarise Series 5 in one word, they’ll probably say ‘fairytale’. And it’s not hard to see why.
Matt Smith’s Doctor is the most whimsical yet. His companion, Amelia Pond, has a name which even the Doctor admits is “like a name in a fairytale”. And their memorable first meeting – the Doctor crash-landing into Amelia’s front garden – could easily be taken from the pages of a children’s book.
But the man in charge of the show at the time, Steven Moffat, has since insisted that he didn’t consciously go for a fairytale vibe, arguing that this is a “grotesque exaggeration” of his version of Doctor Who.
That’s not to say that he disagrees with the fairytale reading completely, or that it was completely coincidental. On the contrary, Moffat argues that the whole of Doctor Who is, to some extent, like a fairytale, because that's the genre it most closely resembles.
“It’s about a wizard in a magic box with a magic wand,” he said.
So yes, it’s probably a bit reductive to describe Series 5 as a fairytale, though it does certainly give off that vibe.
