10 MORE Greatest Battles In Star Trek

8. The Odyssey's Sacrifice

USS Odyssey Star Trek Deep Space Nine Galaxy Class
CBS / Shout! Studios

The USS Odyssey arrived at Deep Space Nine for its final mission, totally unprepared for what was to come in the Gamma Quadrant. There was a deliberate intention behind the use of a Galaxy-class ship in The Jem'hadar, one similar to the inclusion of a broken Constitution-class hull in The Best Of Both Worlds, Part II. Even if our heroes had been present - it would have made no difference.

This battle is 'great' in that the after-effects were felt for years, tens of thousands of light years apart. The destruction of the Odyssey introduced us, the audience, to this grand new threat from the other side of the Wormhole, yet it also served as a new mission statement for Deep Space Nine. This was a post-Roddenberry take on Star Trek. The final frontier was nowhere near as safe as we believed.

The brutality of the fight only serves to cement this fact. From the opening volley, the Odyssey is doomed. All that remains is an attempt to flee - and we all know how that went.

It was a dark day for Starfleet, and for the Alpha Quadrant.
