Animated shows light up our TV screens unlike anything else. From childhood favorites to stories that transcend age and generation, these shows have given us some of the most heartfelt, relatable viewing experiences ever.

And one area where animated shows have created much of their magic is the portrayal of female protagonists. Most would agree live action products have taken far longer than excusable to finally give proper representation to their women. But the animated realm often beat them to the punch.

For decades the animated universes have given us a plethora of strong, interesting women who have not only provided some awesome hours of television - and a little bit of inspiration for many of us too.

Without any more beating around the bush, these are the ten most badass female characters from animated shows.

A slight disclaimer before starting: this list is limited to western animated shows only and doesn't include animes, which of course deserve a list of their own.

10. Cheetara - ThunderCats

The greatest heroes and heroines are the ones who rise above the greatest of adversities. And the ThunderCats are the literal definitions of that. Witnessing the horror of their home planet being destroyed, the only surviving members of the species escape to an alien planet where they hope to rebuild their civilization. And they wouldn’t have gotten very far without the woman of the house.

Cheetara is in many ways the wisest head in the group. She isn’t over-zealous courtesy of her own powers, doesn’t suffer from leadership complexes and rarely gets outsmarted in a fight. The latter mostly because enemies can barely see her.

Blessed with the powers of super speed, because you know Cheetah and all, she runs rings around most of the evil-doers who dare cross the ThunderCats and never wastes a second of emotion until the job is done. Except that one time she falls in love with a bad guy but come on now everyone’s got a heart.
