10 Most Brilliantly Miserable Soap Christmas Moments

1. Plane Crash In Emmerdale (1993)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00I5PQg9FLo The Plane Crash in Emmerdale was also a little later than Christmas Day, taking place on the 30th December 1993, and involved a large series of events taking place in which actually saved the show from being cancelled entirely, bringing in much higher viewing figures during and after it took place. The crash began with Frank Tate noticing a ball of fire hitting his wife Kim's stables, who later had to be restrained as her horses cried for help. Shortly after, fluids blind Nick and Archie, before Archie is engulfed in flames and presumed dead. Many other horrific events took place, with the windows of the Woolpack exploding and one of the plane's wings crashing into Joe Sugden's car, leaving Annie Kempinski in a coma but killing her husband Leonard, even though they had only been married for two months. Eric Pollard also raised suspicions following the crash, with many Villagers believing that he was playing up his search for his Wife and that he had in fact killed her himself before she could report him for forging cheques. Many bodies are found all around the Village following this disaster, with four of the Soap's central characters not surviving the events that took place. Another Villager, Chris Tate, is found trapped under heavy rubble and although he is airlifted to hospital, he loses the use of his legs forever. The plane crash has been mentioned numerous times in Emmerdale's history; at one point Eric is even blamed for killing his wife, but reveals to Val that the flames and debris killed her before he had the chance. Because of the way that this particularly miserable series of events are probably the only reason Emmerdale has survived until this day and because of the high death toll, especially when including all the unnamed passengers from the plane, it is only fitting that it is awarded the number 1 most brilliantly miserable soap Christmas moment of all time.
