Dirk Gently's pilot pans opens at a murder scene in a fancy hotel suite. Multiple bloody bodies are strewn in every room. What makes the scene weirder, however, are the massive smouldering shark-bites out of the hotel fittings and the appearance of the tiny black kitten.

Dirk Gently is filled with strange weapons, from scissor swords to electrifying crossbows. Yet viewers probably missed the fact that the panning shot's shown the murder weapon to Dirk Gently's first case in the first minute: the black kitten which happens to be inhabited with the soul of a shark.

The kitten was made in the Soul Exchanger, that a cult has been using to swap their souls into different bodies to prolong their lives and prosperity. The Men of the Machine also use the Exchanger to trap humans into animals, as a means of keeping them hostage.

If the kitten is 'triggered' a ghostly shark will fly out and proceed to chomp pieces out of everyone nearby. The Men of the Machine bring the "weaponized soul" to a hostage exchange, but the cute little fuzzball 'misfires', leading to the dismemberment a roomful of cult members and one time-traveller in a few fiery bites.
