10 Most Cringeworthy Doctor Who Moments From The 60s
4. WOTAN Calls For Doctor Who - The War Machines (1966)
Imagine you're a typical Doctor Who fan (and you most likely are) trying to explain some of the basics of your favourite TV show to your non-fan friends: he travels in a police box through time and space; it's bigger on the inside than the outside; and his name is the Doctor, not "Doctor Who," no matter what the credits and the Radio Times might say. So what do you do when you decide to show said non-fans The War Machines and the main villain of the piece, the super computer WOTAN, trots out the line, "Doctor-Who-is-required"? Um. And even more annoyingly, it doesn't happen just once: there are at least two instances, in two separate episodes, in which this mechanical boobie (and later, one of its human lackeys) calls for a character which we fans all know in our heart of hearts is not, repeat not, called that. He just isn't. Period. And yet they keep saying it, again and again... Compared to this, we can just about forgive the groovy kids in the Inferno nightclub going on about the Doctor's "fab gear." Actually, we can't, but it's easier to explain away than this.
