10 Most Disturbing Twin Peaks Moments
4. How’s Annie?
For 25 years, eleven months and eleven days, fans of Twin Peaks were caught between two worlds, wondering whether the past is the future and the future really is the past. One question (maybe a few more) hung in the zeitgeist: “How’s Annie?”
The final moments of the second and last series, at least in the 20th century, are considered to be one of the greatest cliffhangers in television history. Windom Earle, former FBI agent and Cooper’s ex partner, kidnaps Annie, Cooper’s new love interest (sorry Audrey). Driven by revenge, Earle brings Annie to The Black Lodge where he intends to give her to BOB and lure Cooper into his trap. BOB, however, has other plans, creating a doppelgänger of Cooper and setting Earle’s head on fire. Cooper, or so we think, returns to Twin Peaks with Annie and all is right with the world again… almost.
Returning to direct the final episode, Lynch took back control of the second season, choosing to show us what had become of Twin Peaks. You want answers? Well tough, said Lynch – Cooper, inhabited by evil BOB, and was now free to spread the evil throughout the world. How’s Annie? Who cared anymore? The investigation was over, Cooper had failed and by association, so had we. The final shot of Twin Peaks, at least until 2017, saw Cooper laughing maniacally, his face dripping with blood as he repeats, “How’s Annie?” over and over again.
How’s that for an ending?
