10 Most Disturbing Twin Peaks Moments
3. Gotta Light?
Part eight: possibly the most Lynchian piece of filmmaking by Lynch himself.
What initially appears to be more of an experimental art film than an episode of Twin Peaks, 'Gotta Light?' takes a drastic shift from not only the main plot but also the visual style of previous episodes in this and the preceding two seasons.
‘Gotta Light?’ gives us the creation of evil (Judy and BOB), the birth of light and the forces of good (Laura Palmer), the purpose of the Woodsmen (purveyors of smoke, electricity and oil, the conduit of evil) and perhaps the most compelling evidence yet for theories behind the entire Twin Peaks universe – is the show actually self aware? Are the forces of evil using mainstream entertainment to corrupt our minds?
After revealing the The Fireman’s plan to use Laura’s murder investigation to defeat BOB, the Woodsmen descend upon a remote radio station in New Mexico, crushing the skulls of the technicians and implanting a new message to broadcast, “This is the water and this is the well. Drink full, and descend. The horse is the white of eyes and dark within.” In the process of transmitting the message to the world via radio waves and TV broadcasts, Lynch is citing this as the very moment our collective obsession with television began to rot our souls.
The entire episode is an anthology of disturbing moments and one of the most surreal experiences amongst an already abstract universe.
