4. Pierce’s Will
Pierce’s death was ridiculous and clearly played for laughs against the character after the massive falling out between showrunner Dan Harmon and actor Chevy Chase. In case you’d forgotten, Pierce masturbated himself to death filling up jars of semen to give away at the reading of his will.
Leaving that aside though, most of the episode is deeply touching. Much earlier in the show, Pierce had faked being at death’s door and gave them all parting gifts which were seemingly generous but designed to mess with them. This episode subverts that, by initially putting them through the wringer (via Walton Goggins and a lie detector), then offering something special and heartfelt. Also, sperm.
The most wholesome moments come with Britta and Troy. With Britta, Pierce follows up on his gesture at the Sally Hawkins dance by telling her not to be so hard on herself, and to take life a little less seriously.
Troy on the other hand is told be he has ‘the greatest gift... the heart of a hero’. Pierce also encourages the young man not to waste it, and offers him his entire fortune so long as he undertakes an epic adventure...
