1. Buffy finding her mother on the couch at the end of 'I Was Made To Love You'
Joyce Summers – Buffys mom – was the warmest, kindest person on the show. The true heart of it. So killing her off midway through season 5 was truly heartbreaking. What was worse, was that we didn’t see it coming.
After suffering a brain tumor earlier on in the season, Joyce had seemingly fully recovered and fans could relax. Out of the blue, at the end of ‘I was Made To Love You’, Buffy comes home to find her mother dead on the couch from a brain aneurism, an after effect of the tumor. Hearing her say “Mom? Mom? Mommy?” as she comes to realize something terrible has happened made us pray that the next episode somehow everything will work itself out. We couldn’t have been more wrong.
In one of the show's best directed episodes, and arguably one of the best depictions of death ever in television, we are forced to sit through all the hard silences and waiting that comes with death. It was such a moving episode from beginning to end, accompanied by no music throughout its run, only exemplifying the feeling of loss from Joyce’s death.
Coming out of nowhere, bringing the entire cast to their knees and going off on such an incredibly well told episode, Joyce’s death will remain engraved in our memories forever. We miss you Buffys mom.
