Okay, you knew this one was gonna be on here.

It's no secret that Star Trek transporters basically just disintegrate you and put you back together. This topic has become one of the most debated issues in all of science-fiction.

It's pretty much The Ship of Theseus; if you have all the same atoms after being ripped apart then did you really die? Many say Dr. McCoy had the right idea. The extra time it takes to fly a shuttle is worth not being ripped apart atom by atom.

And on top of the idea of being disintegrated, you also have to deal with the very real threat of transporter malfunctions. A few notable examples include the two crewmen whos bodies got deformed and twisted from The Motion Picture, Tuvok and Neelix from Voyager’s episode Tuvix who get combined into one person and later “murdered” by Janeway, and several members of the crew from the Next Generation episode “Rascals” who get reverted back into children...
